Will this album be released in 2017?

Doubtful. He is already releasing BCC in September. It'd be too crowded to release it around the same time frame. Most likely March-April 2018. For some reason, marketing people think that new releases sell best in the spring and fall and not during the summer or winter months. Go figure...

Any update here?

Hej Daniel,
thanks for asking... I'm curious too. Would be nice to know at least was it finished, is it ready to be released or still a work in progress...

...from a recent interview with Joe S.
QuoteWhat’s up ahead for you as far as new music and your next album?
I’m putting the finishing touches on a new solo record. It’s a big, fat, rock and soul album that I’m very excited about. We recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and at Sammy’s studio up here in the Bay Area, with Mike Fraser producing. It will be released on Legacy/Sony early next year. -
So it will have Joe Satriani instead of GLENN HUGHES written on capital letters on the cover?

Chad Smith talks all things Glenn including a recent session with Joe Satriani and more on the Eddie Trunk Podcast
Tune-in at around the 49 minute mark!

Damn, it doesn't sound like he's gonna sing on this record...

No vocals, bass only.

Joe Satriani is releasing a new album titled "What Happens Next" on January 12, 2018. Apparently Glenn plays bass throughout with Chad Smith on drums completing the trio.
I have two questions: who's on vocals? I assume it's Glenn.
Is this the "secret" project Glenn has been referring to? I assume Yes. -

— Joe Satriani (@chickenfootjoe) September 18, 2017The legendary guitarist, Joe Satriani, has announced his 16th solo album titled, "What Happens Next".
What Happens Next was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California with a remarkable power trio: Satriani on guitar, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Black Country Communion) on bass and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), the latter reuniting with Satriani for the first time since their work in the supergroup Chickenfoot.
For the album, Satriani was once again joined by producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser, his frequent collaborator over the last 20 years. What Happens Next is set for a January 12th, 2018 release.
Track Listing:

It's a shame it's not a band project with Glenn singing. That could have been interesting. I don't think Glenn is appreciated as much as he could be for his bass playing. Maybe this album will give him the chance to shine and let his playing get the credit it deserves.

Considering the state of music industry these days, Joe is taking a chance, and limiting himself, releasing an instrumental rock album. Hopefully big names, like Glenn and Chad, will give him a boost. But if songs are strong, why not give them a little boost with good vocals?
Even though Glenn is not singing, I commend him for trying different things all the time and not staying stale. -
All 'instrumental' albums are nothing new for Satriani! Think it be a BIGGER seller if Glenn was 'singing and playing bass...

Yep, at least I would have bought it. Now I'll listen to it from Spotify
"expect the unexpected" - Now I'm feeling a bit disappointed so what are the chances...

He's also mentioned he will tour with a famour guitarist in 2018. I suspect this is another guitarist than Satriani, seeing that he will embark on a G3 tour? -
I've never been one to 'listen' to an ENTIRE album of 'instrumentals'.....it was Glenn's voice that made me a Trapeze fan!!
-
I have seen Joe Satriani multiple times and I can say that I don't miss the vocals in his music. Like the Steve Morse Band, Joe Satriani has something very special: the music tells it all. Only the very, very best have the ability to do this. Plus Glenn is one of the best bass-players out there: so I am looking forward to them touring together: music without restrictions!

Hmm...there are no famous guitar players besides Tony Iommi
