5. BurnQuoteHe’s been hailed “The Voice Of Rock”, and for good reason, as this 7 CD live box set ably testifies. With vocals soaked in blues and soul, Glenn Hughes has played with and fronted many legends of rock, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes-Thrall, Trapeze and Black Country Communion.
When Glenn’s 1994 tour hit Japan, always a stronghold of Glenn fans, he was promoting the “From Now On…” album. Originally released as “Burning Japan Live”, the show features ‘The Liar’, ‘Lay My Body Down’ and the title track from the new “From Now On…” album, among an incendiary set that touches on some of the cream of Glenn’s back catalogue, including the Hughes-Thrall classics ‘Muscle And Blood’ and ‘I Got Your Number’, Trapeze’s ‘Coast To Coast’, plus a host of Purple classics, including ‘Lady Double Dealer’, ‘This Time Around’ and ‘Owed To ‘G’’.
The same tour took Glenn to the Alexandra Rock Teater venue in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 25, 1994. In a similar collection to the Japanese show on CD1, the appreciative Danish crowd on CD2 are treated to Deep Purple’s ‘Burn’, ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ and ‘You Keep On Moving’, as well as ‘Into The Void’ from the then current “From Now On…” album, co-written with guitarist Eric Anders Bojstedt and keyboard player Mic Michaeli, in a band that also featured Thomas Larsson on guitar, Ian Haugland on drums and John Levén on bass.
Disc 3 kicks off with four lively Deep Purple classics captured at the Gran Rex Theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina in December 2003. The acoustic set from Sydney, Australia in June 2006 that completes Disc 3 sees Glenn delve back to his debut solo platter, “Play Me Out”, with the single ‘I Found A Woman’, followed by a unique cover of ‘Nights In White Satin’ from the 2006 CD “Music For The Divine”, plus a take of Procol Harum’s ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, an impassioned version of “Burn” album classic ‘Mistreated’, plus the title track to the album he was then promoting, “Soul Mover”.
Discs 4 and 5 kick off with Purple barnstormer ‘Stormbringer’ from a show at Circo Voador, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on October 28, 2007. As well as Purple cuts ‘Might Just Take Your Life’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ that finales with ‘Burn’, the set includes ‘Steppin’ On’ and ‘You Got Soul’ from “Music For The Divine”, ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’, ‘Land Of The Livin’ (Wonderland)’ and the driving title track from “Soul Mover”, with a band featuring Glenn on vocals & bass guitar, JJ Marsh on guitar, Anders Olinder on keyboards and Matt Goom on drums.
Despite his huge talents as a musician and as a songwriter, the 80s were relatively quiet period for Glenn fans, something that was more than made up for in the much more prolific 90s and noughties. In a run of very powerful solo releases, “First Underground Nuclear Kitchen” is one of the best, and an album he was promoting when his 2010 solo tour hit Belgian venue Spirit of 66 in Verviers on October 16, 2010. Spread across Discs 6 and 7, the show kicks off with Hughes-Thrall’s ‘Muscle And Blood’ followed by Trapeze’s ‘Touch My Life’ and ‘Medusa’, the latter covered in 2010 by Black Country Communion. By this time Glenn had built up a very solid and impressive back catalogue of solo releases, and this Belgian show includes ‘Orion’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’ from 2005’s “Soul Mover”, ‘Can’t Stop The Flood’ from 2001’s “Building The Machine”, ‘You Kill Me’ from 1999’s “The Way It Is” and the title track to 1996’s “Addiction”. In a band featuring Anders Olinder on keyboards, Søren Anderson on guitar and Pontus Engborg on drums, no Glenn show would be complete without revisiting Deep Purple, represented here with ‘Sail Away’ originally from 1974’s “Burn”.
Purple Records have reissued expanded collections of Glenn’s solo catalogue, including “Play Me Out”, “Feel”, “Addiction”, “The Way It Is”, “Return Of Crystal Karma” and “Building The Machine”. Glenn Hughes also appears on the recently reissued “The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper’s Feast” by Roger Glover And Friends, also on Purple Records. -

Hi,
I wonder who makes selections for these boxsets? Fans could be asked...
T -
Can any fans here review the latest Cherry Red Official bootleg volume 2?
-
These remastered are a bit of a mixed bag.
The Cherry Red label is not in the same re-issue category as let's say Rock Candy Records. A few years ago I bought some Pat Travers re-issues from Cherry Red which were disappointing.
Although it is great to see Glenn Hughes solo records in US record stores, Cherry Red could have done a better job with the bonus discs.
The Astoria concert as extra disc on The Way it is , sounds like an audience bootleg and probably is. And where is the Japanese bonus track 'the world is broken' on Return of Crystal Karma?
The Feel and Addiction reissues were a tad better, But I don't understand why the bonus live concerts are not from the same album tourRegarding the live concerts not being from the same tour, I would concur with you.
For me the bonus live gig from S.I.Y.K.O.R 2003 JB's Dudley (formerly known as 'Freak Flag Flying') is well recorded.
A great line up with the likes of 'Seventh Star', 'In My Blood' & 'Beyond The Numb' represents the best value re-issue
& package. -

& package.Hi,
it is well recorded...but runs too fast - especially Beyond The Numb...probably in order to fit one CD.
And what comes to Bootleg set 2... no, I haven't even opened the boxset yet... all of those gigs have been around almost since they were recorded
T -
I have heard about 'Freak Flag' running too fast. I have never really noticed it too much as we're not into the 'Pinky and Perky' zone. Perhaps consider Downloading (for free) 'Audacity' and rectify the tempo accordingly?
I really want to hear what the bonus mix of 'Still The Night' that's on the current 'Phenomena Anthology' cd,is like, before I shell out, if you've got it that is? Do give us a review or your personal highlights from the Live Bootleg Vol 2 live boxset, when time and tide permits. Thanks for responding. -
Justified Man – The Studio Albums 1995-2003, 6-CD Boxset
Released: January 31, 2020.
Pre-Order NOW! www.cherryred.co.uk/product/glenn-hughes-justified-man-the-studio-albums-1995-2003-6cd-boxsetQuoteGlenn Hughes, “The Voice Of Rock”, first came to prominence in Trapeze, a band featuring future Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley, and future Judas Priest drummer, Dave Holland. Following their third album, “You Are The Music, We’re Just The Band”, Glenn joined Deep Purple in 1973 for their “Burn”, “Stormbringer” and “Come Taste The Band” albums. Deep Purple split in 1976, with its members following various solo and side-projects. The first fruits of Glenn’s post Purple career appeared with “Play Me Out” (also available on Purple Records), issued in July 1977. Glenn would go on to collaborate with Pat Thrall in Hughes-Thrall, Joe Lynn Turner in the Hughes-Turner Project, with Tony Iommi in Black Sabbath, plus pursue a prolific solo career through the 1990s and beyond.
• CD1: Glenn’s fourth solo album, “Feel”, was originally released in 1995, and finds the singer veering towards more pop, soul and funk sounds rather than the hard rock that he’s often better known for. Former Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum guests, and the album also sees a welcome collaboration with his Hughes-Thrall partner, Pat Thrall.
• CD2: Glenn’s fifth solo album, “Addiction” was originally released in 1996, and unlike the more soulful pop of his previous record “Feel”, “Addiction” sees the singer returning to a much harder rocking sound. Guitarist Marc Bonilla performs, co-produces and co-wrote nine of the ten original songs.
• CD3: Glenn’s 1999 solo album, “The Way It Is” was produced by Glenn Hughes & Michael Scott, as well as featuring original material written with guitarist JJ Marsh. The album also includes two versions of the Jimi Hendrix classic, ‘Freedom’.
• CD4: Glenn’s 2000 solo album, “Return Of Crystal Karma”, was produced by Glenn Hughes & Michael Scott, featuring original material written with guitarist JJ Marsh and keyboard player Hans Zermüehlen, it also includes the track ‘Gone’, co-written with Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi. The album even features a guest cameo from The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst.
• CD5: Released in 2001, “Building The Machine” was the follow-up to 2000’s “Return of Crystal Karma”, and as well as featuring original material written with long-time collaborator and guitarist JJ Marsh, the album also includes a version of the Deep Purple classic, ‘Highball Shooter’, a song which had originally appeared on 1974’s “Stormbringer”. Special guests include guitarist Pat Travers, who duets with Hughes on the Rare Earth cover ‘I Just Want To Celebrate’, plus Toto’s Bobby Kimball and The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst appearing on backing vocals.
• CD6: With a title that pays homage to one of Glenn’s heroes, Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life”, the album mixes his beloved funk with a deliberate 70s style hard rock. As well as featuring long-time collaborator JJ Marsh on guitar, the album includes guest spots from bassist Billy Sheehan and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, as well as co-producer Jeff Kollman. ‘Higher Places (Song for Bonzo)’ is a song dedicated to Glenn’s dear friend, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.TRACK LISTING

GLENN HUGHES: THE OFFICIAL BOOTLEG BOX SET: VOLUME THREE : 1995-2010 6-CD BOXSET
Released: July 31st, 2020
Pre-Order NOW! www.cherryred.co.uk/product/glenn-hughes-the-official-bootleg-box-set-volume-three-1995-2010-6cd-boxsetQuoteHe has been quite rightly hailed as “The Voice Of Rock”, as this 6 CD live box set ably testifies. With vocals soaked in blues and soul, Glenn Hughes has fronted many legendary rock acts, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes-Thrall, Trapeze and Black Country Communion.
• This third volume of unreleased live concerts from Glenn’s solo career kicks off with a show from his 1995 tour to support his then latest album “Feel”, plus the previous year’s “From Now On… “, with an (almost) hometown solo appearance at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on 17th November 1995 (CD1 & CD2). Spread across two discs, the set kicks off with songs from what were Glenn’s more recent solo offerings, with ‘Big Time’, ‘The Liar’ and ‘Push’, before Trapeze classics ‘Coast To Coast’ and ‘Way Back To The Bone’. It wouldn’t be a Glenn show without featuring Deep Purple Mk3 and Mk4 hits, with ‘This Time Around’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ from 1975’s “Come Taste The Band”, ‘You Fool No One’ and the title track from 1974’s “Burn” plus the title track from “Stormbringer”.
• The following day Glenn made a live appearance at the more intimate LA2 in London, on 18th November 1995 (CD3). Unsurprisingly, much of the set replicates that from Wolverhampton, and no bad thing as Glenn revisits songs from across his long and varied musical journey, from Trapeze to Purple to his solo renaissance in the 1990s.
• 13 years later saw Glenn performing an exclusive acoustic show at Esquires in Bedford on 3rd May 2008 (CD4), celebrating the 40th anniversary of Deep Purple. As well as the expected Purple classics ‘Mistreated’, ‘This Time Around’ / ‘Owed to “G”‘, ‘Holy Man’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Stormbringer’, Glenn also includes a rare airing of his debut solo single ‘I Found A Woman’ from his debut solo LP, “Play Me Out”. Glenn even includes a cover of The Moody Blues’ ‘Nights In White Satin’.
• The final two discs feature a show recorded at the Spring & Airbrake, Belfast on 9th October 2010 (CD5 & 6). Kicking off with Hughes – Thrall’s ‘Muscle And Blood’, the solo songs ‘Orion’ from “Soul Mover”, ‘You Kill Me’ from “The Way It Is” and ‘Can’t Stop The Flood’ from “Building The Machine” are included in a show that climaxes with the title track to the “Addiction” album and finally Deep Purple’s “Burn”.
• Purple Records have also reissued expanded collections of Glenn’s solo catalogue, including “Play Me Out”, “Feel”, “Addiction”, “The Way It Is”, “Return Of Crystal Karma” and “Building The Machine”. Glenn Hughes also appears on the reissued 3CD set of 1974’s “The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper’s Feast” by Roger Glover And Friends, also on Purple Records.
• Whilst every effort has been made to produce the best possible audio, limitations in the material drawn from various, non-standard, and unofficial sources means that the quality may not be up to the standard usually expected. All tracks have been included for their historical importance, and to present an alternative anthology of Glenn Hughes live on stage from 1995-2010.DISC ONE
