David Coverdale pays tribute on his website to his first stage appearance with Deep Purple in Copenhagen on December 9, 1973
Thank you, David!
MK III in Innsbruck, Austria, Dec 17 1973
„Deep Purple – the new guys rule the stage“
The attached article from my archive is from the German POP magazine. It describes how enthusiastic the two newbies were accepted by the fans and what went on after the show.
Ritchie Blackmore is the first who disappears. For him it must always be the most beautiful girl, his roadie knows his taste. The girl has been locked somewhere, she is happy.
David Coverdale returns from another room, beaming „she has nice t*ts“.
Glenn Hughes stays cool, knowing the scenario from Trapeze days. He hasn’t decided yet, grabs three girls and calls his driver.
Ian Paice’s girl is waiting at the hotel.
Only Jon Lord remains, talks to the journalists, has a few drinks. At his age you can afford to play hard to get. A real beauty one of the roadies finally presents makes him change his mind...
POP later reported that the article caused a big stink for Ritchie Blackmore whose than German wife Babs read it too :p The Man in Black saw red! The reporter who wrote it didn’t even go to the next Purple gig. Jon Lord had told the editor-in-chief that Ritchie and his Huns were after the bloke’s head
A citation from Glenn:
"If we talked about everything that occured girlfriends and others could get hurt. You know, there is a lot of stuff going on in a band that people never see."
Unless you invite the press backstage...
