Glenn Hughes - New Projects & A Career Retrospective
Where does one start with the Glenn Hughes story? Named after big band leader Glenn Miller, music has always been a part of his life, but ironically his success at such a young age almost did him in with a cocaine addiction which lasted two decades and a near fatal heart attack. Plucked from a band of real mates with a common musical goal, Trapeze, with its funk-rock motif, Hughes suddenly found himself in what was then the biggest band in the world, Deep Purple, with its larger than life persona and twenty-something tons of gear flown from show to show in a modified passenger plane. The girls were plentiful, money wasn't a problem and drugs were given to musicians for free, not a good combination for a young middle-class Brit who at about twenty-three or four years old was on the cusp of an album which would electrify the world, "Burn". The whole frightening trip is chronicled in "Glenn Hughes: The Autobiography From Deep Purple to Black Country Communion". Learn about the book and more including the "Rock Against MS Benefit Concert" at GlennHughes.com The event takes place with Glenn and several dozen other well known performers on Wednesday, March 27th at the Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood sponsored by KLOS-FM and hosted by Rockline's Bob Coburn.
As for this next Rockline, we intend to shine a light on Hughes' remarkable career, to try somehow to fit enough music into 90 minutes to provide a fair representation of the voluminous contribution he has made with Trapeze, Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes- Thrall, a stupendous solo career (which is sometimes undervalued) and more including how Glenn came to have a venue named after him in Eastern Europe. We'll figure out the music; count on it to be action packed.
