John Price was struggling to perfect his "Wild Thing."
"Wild thing, I think I love you, but I wanna knooow for sure," crooned the 55-year-old miner from Perth, Australia.
"I'm trying to turn him into the Love god," said Grammy-winning songwriter Mark Hudson. "Right now, he's more like Jerry Lewis."
Price was confident he'd master the number by nightfall.
The coaching came as part of Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp, where would-be stars are trained by the pros at prices starting at $2,000.
In another studio, former Deep Purple bass player Glenn Hughes led the wanna-bes in his band's signature song, "Smoke on the Water."
"Everybody who picks up a guitar plays that. It's probably the best rock 'n' roll riff in the world," said Gino Santangelo, 48, of the Bronx, who also plays guitar with the Brooklyn-based band Flashback.
Brian Gumbel, 33, a sales director from the upper East Side, normally plays the keyboard, but was chosen to sing in a band led by former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson.
"I've only sang at like, 3 in the morning in karaoke bars," he said.
The camp, on a nationwide summer tour, stopped in New York Monday. After a day of jamming, nine newly formed bands were picked to open last night for the band Extreme at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza.
"The idea is to have fun," Hudson said. "At the end of this, if we don't walk off the stage saying 'Wow, we rocked!' I haven't done my job."
