I want to add a few names to the list that no one has touched on yet.
Jim Fielder, the brilliant bassist for Blood Sweat And Tears..Jaco Pastorius was greatly influenced by him.
Mel Schacher, the skinny kid with the huge sound that gave Grand Funk their classic sound.
Felix Pappalardi....what couldn't he play?? The Laurel to Leslie West's Hardy.
James Jamerson..The Funk Man himself, the first Motown bass master.....and let us not forget those who followed him in Hitsville; Bob Babbit, Ralphe Armstrong, Tony Newton and Greg Reeves.
A full decade before Pino Palladino and Tony Franklin showed that a fretless bass could rock, Bad Company's Boz Burrell put the fretless bass in the Top Ten with "Can't Get Enough".
Berry Oakley of The Allman Brothers..killer sound and a jazzer's chops.
Joe Osborne and Carol Kaye; session giants whose list of hit records will blow your mind. -
Glenn
Andy West
Louis Johnson
Kyle Brock
Roscoe Beck
Leland Sklar
Travis Carlton
many more already mentioned. I take my hat off to great bass players, without them the whole bottom would fall out
