Uli Jon Roth, Vernon Reid, Alex Skolnick and fretless harp guitarist, Tim Donahue, have been added to the lineup of artists that will perform at the G-TARanaki first international guitar festival, set to take place July 14th-19th in Taranaki, New Zealand.

All of the acts are giving exclusive New Zealand shows, which involve full concert performances, workshops, forums and jam sessions. Joe Satriani will be also giving fans an intimate "Club Joe" workshop before his headline show.

Venture Taranaki events development manager Garry Sharpe-Young says the event is already proving historic. "Not only do we have these amazing artists all coming out to Taranaki to perform, we have a number of unique and never to be repeated collaborations, duets and jams happening," he says.

"Glenn Hughes is playing a full electric set with a unique Kiwi band featuring guitar virtuoso Kara Gordon and Vernon Reid will be playing with some of New Zealand's finest too. The musical spread of the event is huge — metal, rock, jazz, blues, folk and classical. Many of these artists are breaking U.S. tours to play here, so we are honored."

Legendary vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes will perform with a unique, Kiwi-based band when he plays the G-TARanaki International Guitar Festival on July 19th at the New Plymouth TSB Stadium in New Zealand. Although he will be utilizing his regular Swedish keyboard player Anders Olinder, he will also be joined by three New Zealanders, guitarists Kara Gordon and Simon Koretz, plus drummer Nathan Koretz. Gordon is a winner of the recent Rock2Wgtn guitarist competition while the Koretz siblings regularly perform with their own Hamilton-based band 8FORTY8 as well as regularly performing tribute sets to Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Dream Theater.

Other G-TARanaki performers include Uli Jon Roth, Joe Satriani, Gilby Clarke, the Alex Skolnick Trio, fretless harp guitarist Tim Donahue, Kiwi icon Gray Bartlett, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Matthew Marshall, Brian Hatcher, Darren Broughton, Ross Halliday, Frank John and a host of others.

Axes go under hammer for charity

A range of rock memorabilia will go under the hammer for charity to kick off Taranaki's international guitar festival next month.

Among the haul are guitars signed by Irish supergroup U2 and AC/DC guitarist Angus Young, photos signed by Pink Floyd and Bon Jovi and a signed Elton John CD.

The rock auction is being held at the official launch of guitar festival G-TARanaki and money raised will go to the Taranaki Cancer Society.

Taranaki Cancer Society special events co-ordinator Kelly Batley says the auction items are sourced by the Helping Hand Group, an organisation that helps charities arrange events and raise money. Ms Batley says the funds will go towards the society's new centre, presently being built in New Plymouth.

It gets 80% of the auction's takings.

Previous auctions have seen a U2-signed guitar return $37,500, a Roger Federer-signed tennis racquet net $16,000 and a guitar signed by The Rolling Stones raise $55,600.

"It's hard to know what we might get. It really depends on the night and who is bidding," says Ms Batley.

She hopes the auction might attract some serious collectors and people from outside Taranaki have been invited. The auction is being held at Puke Ariki on July 14, the night the five-day G-TARanaki festival opens.

While the event is "invite only", anyone who is keen to bid on any of the items should contact the Cancer Society. Bids will be taken prior to the auction as well as on the night and details about the items going under the hammer can be found at www.taranakicancersociety.org.nz.

Ms Batley says the society would also be keen to hear from anyone who has rock memorabilia they might want to donate to the auction.

The auctioned items will be on display throughout the festival along with an exhibition of rare guitars at Puke Ariki. The G-TARanaki festival being held in New Plymouth features a string of international performers, including guitar legend Joe Satriani, Guns n' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and former Deep Purple and Black Sabbath bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes.

The festival will include two major concerts at the TSB Stadium.

There will also be classical performances, acoustic midnight sessions, workshops, clinics and panel discussion forums.

Venture Taranaki events project manager Garry Sharpe-Young said yesterday tickets to all events were selling well.
