Live in Detroit, Michigan with Chad Smith

  • There was a huge blizzard which made the drive to the gig slow and crappy and the drive home even slower and crappier!

But the show was awesome. Just an incredible performance by Hughes and the band. Glenn was coughing from time to time, but it certainly didn't show in his voice. I've only seen Glenn once other time (during the Voices of Classic Rock tour a few years ago) but I have heard a lot of his live performances and his vocals last night were as good as I ever heard. It's so amazing to see him do that live.

The band played loose and most songs turned into extended jam sessions. They all seemed to be having a lot of fun, joking around with each other and laughing, and there was a lot of energy in the performance. I was really impressed with Jeff Kollman - I thought he was outstanding and wish he would play with Hughes more often. Chad was great, of course - he beats the hell out of the drums and kept tossing sticks over his head towards the people in the balcony behind the stage. Plus, he flipped his entire drumkit over after the last song. Ed Roth was really good on the keys, too.

No surprises on the setlist - pretty typical stuff: Soul Mover, Orion, You Keep on Moving, Steppin' On, Land of the Livin', Don't Let Me Bleed, Coast to Coast (dedicated to Mel Galley), Gettin' Tighter, Mistreated, and I'm probably missing a couple. Burn was the encore. My friend got a copy of the setlist and Might Just Take Your Life was listed as an encore but wasn't played. There really weren't a lot of songs played, but that's because every song was extended with jams, solos, and vocal gymnastics.

I was in the very front of the stage, in front of the keyboards - probably not the best area for sound quality, but you can't beat the experience (except for a couple annoying guys next to me). Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet up with anyone from this site, nor did I get to get into the meet and greet. The crowd turnout was decent and enthusiastic. And there seemed to be a LOT of people backstage compared to most shows (I think there is a backstage bar on the second floor) - that really gave it more of a party atmosphere. Which was cool - it made the show less formal and more fun - I just wish I was invited to the party!!!

That is my report for now. I'll probably have more to add later when other people start chiming in, but overall my friends and I agreed that it was one of the coolest shows we have been to.

  • Wow, what can I say? This was the best concert I've ever seen, or at least it ranks very very high on my list. I was seated front row center in the balcony, which was empty! I think me and my girlfriend were the only one's up there. The view was perfect, we could see EVERYTHING perfectly. Glenn's voice sounded amazing, you'd never know he was still a little bit sick.

And Chad, WOW. I've seen him before with the Chili Peppers but this was completely different. I don't think i've ever heard him sound so good. You could tell he was really on his game last night and enjoying every minute of it. Not saying he's been bad lately with the Chili Peppers but it certainly seems like he's much more inspired and playing a lot better with Glenn. I even saw him before the set walking around, it was certainly a surprise and all I could really say to him was "hey man, big fan here, have a great show!"

Ed was fantastic on the keys and Jeff on guitar was brilliant as well, but I must say that I was mostly watching Glenn and Chad who absolutely stole the show.

As for the setlist, Jon L pretty much covered it except add You Got Soul. I think there was only 10 songs played, but like he said the extended jams and solos really made up for it.

Again, AMAZING show and thanks to everyone in the band who made it worth the trip even though the drive home was the worst road conditions i've ever drove through.

Would have had pictures, but half way to the concert I realized I forgot my camera! :sint3:

  • Just got back from Detroit after a 3-hour plane delay, supposedly because of the weather, although it wasn't actually snowing today - go figure!!

Fantastic show last night, good venue and the crowd were really into it, despite the blizzard conditions going on outside :)

Once again Chad brings out the best in Glenn - you'd never know he was laid up in bed all last week battling the flu. The voice was in great shape

As mentioned earlier, the encore comprised of just the one song in the end.

Great to meet some of you last night, hopefully we'll have another chance later in the year

Here are a couple of pix and movie clips - enjoy

  • thanks for the post david, and it was cool meeting you. we had a hard time getting out of detroit today as well, not to mention the fact that i wasn't sure if we could even get the car to move out of the snow last night but a long, slow ride to the airport, 3 canceled flights, a move over to jersey and a real sweet talking job to squeeze us in on a flight finally got us back to charleston. great show and Glenn was filled to the brim w/ class once again. amazing that he can still do that and sing that way while still feeling ill, but it was a wonderful time had by all, and we look foward to the (hopefull) anouncement of a few more gigs in the states later this year.
    God bless.

  • Thanks David for everything and especially to you Chad - bloody marvelous. After hearing that rendition of "Coast To Coast", I'm floored. I'm sure your inspiration got Glenn to go that extra mile for everyone

And by the way, you've absolutely got to record that jam you did at the soundcheck - live or studio - I'm knocked out, absolutely brillant stuff.

    Thanks again.

  • Thank you so much David for the pics. I'll have a look at the vids later today
Glad to see you all had great fun and you all got back home safely.
Nice set list. The opening with Soul Mover is quite unusual but such a good idea. And you had Coast to Coast, waouh !!! Never heard this one live.

  • Thanks David for the posts,

I hope that Glenn will come to Barcelona on the next tour, and I wish he is playing Coast to Coast  he has never played in Barcelona.

    Pere

  • Thank you for the pics, clips and reports! Seemed like the band were enjoying themselves, fun to watch.

  • Thanks to each and every one of you for sharing the experience. We read posts about 4-hour drives and long 'plane rides without sometimes grasping just exactly what that involves. That's dedication - and kudos to you all

David - thanks so much for the great shots. Absolutely love the vid for DLMB - everyone's on fire.

... and Chadster - spuds, the gallout? :p

Can I feel it? but of course ... it's in my bones! (blood :D )

I'm dusting down my freak flag for the summer!!

  • Wow! What an amazing experience! I got to the Emerald around 5pm. I saw a limo & 2 buses behind the rear stage door. No one was around, so I walked to the front to see if anyone was there yet. There was a couple from New Hampshire waiting! They flew in for the show--big Glenn Hughes fans! Then the soundcheck started, we got to hear like 5 or 6 songs. Two more guys walked up during soundcheck and they were from South Carolina! They also flew in to see Glenn! Awhile later, an Emerald employee came out & said we could wait up in the Rock Room bar. By now, there was like 20 more people. We all went into the Rock Room to warm up--it was really cold outside & a huge winter storm was on it's way. After about a half hour, they let us enter the Emerald. Most of us went directly to the front of the stage. We had to sit thru an opening act. Then after they were done, a guy from the Rock Dog Productions came & hollered that if you won the meet & greet contest, that you had to go over to this side entrance. I entered the contest, but thought they were going to announce the winners from the stage, but they didn't. So I figured I didn't win. A few minutes later, this woman came running up to her husband & told him that he won the contest. His name was on a sign by the front door. I thought I'd better go check the sign, being that they didn't announce the winners. Sure enough, my name was on the sign! I went running back to the side entrance & told them that I won. They made us wait in the hall a couple mins. Then they escorted us upstairs. A guy came over and said that Glenn & Chad were running late, because they left the building after soundcheck & now were stuck in traffic, cuz the roads were bad. Apparantly, the winter storm had begun (forecast said 9 inches of snow!) Then the guy proceeded to pass out an autographed drum stick from Chad! Thank you Chad!!! He said the meet & greet would take place after the show now. Someone asked if we had to stay upstairs & watch the show, and the guy said, no, you could come back up after the show with your pass. We told him that we never got passes. He told us to go to the will call window & pick them up. So, we all ran down & got our passes. It turned out to be a cool laminated backstage pass! I chose to go back up & watch the show from there, cuz I would be closer to Chad. Plus, when's the next time that I'll watch the show from backstage?

The show was awesome! I was lucky enough to go to their show in L.A. at the Whisky-A-Go-Go last June, so this was my second time seeing them. They played for about an hour & 1/2. If they ever come to your town, definetly go check this show out! Chad's a monster on the drums! My favorite songs were: SOUL MOVER, ORION & DON'T LET ME BLEED.

After the show the Rock Dog guy told us there would be a limit of 3 autographs per person and that the photographer would take our photos with Chad & Glenn. When it was my turn, as I walked up Chad was talking to a roadie , so I said hello to Glenn & told him what a good show it was. He was very thankful. I also told him that I saw their show at the Whiskey last June. He said, "Chaddy, she was at the show in LA at the Whiskey." Chad, still talking to the roadie, looked at me & said, "Oh that's cool" He then looked away, and then did a double take and said, "I know you!" I re-introduced myself. I have met Chad about a dozen times now, but the last was about 4 years ago, so I wasn't sure if he'd remember me---but he did!!! I'm leaving our conversation out of this, but I got to talk to him for a few minutes. The photographer took 2 pics of us together. (As of now, I'm still waiting to hear back from him on how to obtain the pics) Chad kissed me on the cheek & I got a hug, too!! I left soon after. The next I'll see him is when he comes back for the second Toby Redd reunion show in June! I can't wait till then! I put some pics from the show in my album called, "photos by Melanie". Check them out at www.myspace.com/swellmel

  • hey mel, glad to see you made it on here. enjoyed seeing you at the show. hopefully we'll see each other next time too. i looked for the obnoxious guy after the show to see if he still thought that leathertounge was better than f!@#ing Glenn Hughes, but by then i guees he had quietly slipped back away into obscurity.(which would have been the only thing he did qietly the whole night :) ) take care and enjoy the site
