Glenn-playing bass/not playing bass

    Hello all.

    Just thinking today after seeing some old clips on-line,what was the defining moment when Glenn went from singer bassist to singer back to singer bassist again(if there is one?) :confused:

    Well as you probably know, he came back to playing live with his bass fulltime on the 1996 "Addiction" tour for his solo gigs, but also earlier in 1994 during the Trapeze reunion gigs.

    He's said in a few interviews he didn't know what he was thinking by not playing bass himself upon his return to the scene in the early '90s, other than just wanting to have people see him as a singer first, especially as he was on his "comeback" after recovery from drugs &

    alcohol.

    On the Sabbath dates in '86 he appeared without a bass..apart from that and the first few solo tours he has played bass at all solo shows AFAIK. On the few occassions he performs without a bass nowadays (for example during "this time around" on the current tour) he exudes a confidence that was absent in the dark days of sabbath (and to a degree in the early nineties tours)..

    As far as I know it is very difficult to sing and play bass at the same time because what you play is quite different from what you sing. Can you tell me if this is really so? :confused:

    That may be....but Glenn makes it look effortless.......

    Glenn Looks better Singing & Playing Bass. i thinks his bass palying is excellent and effortless. I just goes to show that talent of the man who can both play and sing as well as that at the same time.
    i have been playing guitar for many years and I still have to look at the fretboard when playing nevermind concentrating on singing also.

    I must admit I think Glenn looks so much more natural when singing and playing the bass.

    I cannot play any instrument and I can't sing(would be funny though if I tried them both together :D ).

    Actually............I think I will take up the Lead Electric Triangle whilst performing my rendition of Mistreated(Misplaced more like).

    Anyone fancy joining my band and supporting Glenn in the UK for a full tour?

    I think David could be the Manager/Tour organiser and perhaps Wolfy could Get Mel to sell some T-Shirts at the gigs :thumbup:

    Yes, definitely. But also it happens to flow along and work very naturally, as soon as you've dived deep enough into what you're playing and singing. Master the song and let it flow through you while you're performing.
    Well, at least that's my explanation how it works.
    Took me some time to manage/master and I bow before all my bass-playing/singing heroes who I have constantly watched, listened to and learned from.

    Like Jack Bruce, or Sting, or you name it, I prefer Glenn playing those unique, totally awesome bass lines, it's part of the whole package.

    Another difficulty in playing bass and singing a line or verse....is the syllables sung and the amount of notes played conflicting with each other.... a co-ordination thing.I agree with the above that it takes time and practice.... esp. if you have'nt written the song yourself and decide to play one that originally had a separate vocallist and bass player!!!....I've found that with guitar and vocals too esp. the start to "Children Of The Sea" by Sabbath... for me it's impossible!!!!!

    Pete, your explanation helped me understand and see more clearly the mechanism of playing bass and singing. For a person like me who's not a musician it was difficult to figure it out. Thank you for the clarification! :thumbup:

    So, we are very lucky to have Glenn, who makes it seem so easy and who plays beautifully!! And his music that ''takes away the gloom" and helps us 'keep on moving'!! :)
