Stevie Wonder

  • Has Glenn ever worked with Stevie Wonder ?. They both speciaalise in soul and funk music and I would like to see that happen.

  • hello ayesha. No, glenn and stevie never worked togheter. But, if you hear "feel" album, you find a very cool cover of stevie wonder "maybe your baby" of the "talking book" album.

  • And search out the version of Stevie's "Blame it on the sun" by Glenn and Toto's Bobby Kimball (I think) - it was a radio performance but it was available on the net (legally) for a while. It is absolutely fantastic - sort of thing that sends shivers down the spine.

  • Don't forget "Superstition"!and wasn't "Higher Ground" done too?

Glenn has met Stevie (In the studio?) and considers him a friend- I think there was talk of them doing something together- at least Glenn has expressed the desire. But nothing has ever happened- it would be really cool! I'd like to see it happen for Glenn's sake if nothing else.

  • Oh yeah....I was able to get the Electric Pow Wow CD recently and I will second that!!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Glenn and Stevie did get together in the studio once, though no recording was done....sometime around the Songs In The Key Of Life sessions. I wish I could remember where I read that!

That might of been in a couple of the CHAT sessions we had with him - here and here:

    Quote

Anthony Tyler: Glenn, if given the opportunity, would you consider recording with Stevie Wonder (or have you already)?

Glenn Hughes: I sat in on a session with Stevie. In the 70's. In Songs In The Key Of Live. Of course I would record with him.

Ian: Do you think you'd ever record anything w/ some of the legends of funk like Stevie Wonder, EWF, etc?

Glenn Hughes: I have performed with Stevie live and also EWF. But not in front of people - private events.

  • Hello David,

Thanks for the source info.....I just couldn't place where that information had come from. I was just listening to the Electric Pow Wow version of "I Was Made To Love Her" and who better to take the lead vocal than someone who is a huge fan of stevie Wonder, don't you think??

  • Glenn has also said that during the recording of Burn (I believe) he sought out advice from Stevie and Stevie said something to the effect that Glenn should hold back a bit (or something to that effect). As a singer myself I take that to mean that perhaps Glenn was pushing or trying too hard, as in either pushing his voice hard (he was singing rock after all) or maybe he meant that Glenn had a little too much tension in his throat when singing soulfully. I can her this some in the ballads on the "We are the Music..." album. Just a guess though as Glenn didn't go into details. Still, I like his singing from that period. "We are the Music.." is Glenn's vocal break out album, IMO and you can hear him experimenting with his very gifted voice quite a bit. Noticed he settled down on Burn - much more disciplined, controlled and relaxed.

P.S. I'm glad DP gave David Coverdale to the world (a great baritone), and those glorious harmonies too, but I would have loved to have heard what Glenn could have done on his own. Gillan who? (No offense, love him too).

  • Loving both Stevie & Glenn they are a rare breed that can almost make a poor song sound great with just the voice..very different styles..but both sing from the soul..thats what sets them apart.
